I have a pet peeve (a thing that irritates me.) When ballers and musicians/singers play/sing the wrong moves/notes, off key or out of rhythm, not only can it can be irritating, it can be destructive and painful..
Now think of other things we do like playing sports or our vocation, as in work. If we don’t do it skillfully it can be dangerous for our life or the safety of others too. If we come to the Lord with praise and it is done without skill, it says many things about our heart. Is it a surprise that ministry, sport, work or anything under the sun is done less skillfully also and hurts others. Practice makes perfect may be a falsehood, but NOT practicing is destructive and rebellion. Study the word, pray, serve others, play and practice your instrument, your sport or work skillfully to show yourself approved before Lord and maybe these so-called praise events will heal some ears instead of hurting them. Maybe we will see less fighting and more finesse on the court.
Psalms 33:1-5 LEB
“Exult in Yahweh, O you righteous, for praise is fitting for the upright. Give thanks to Yahweh with the lyre; with a harp of ten strings play to him. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with jubilant shout. For the word of Yahweh is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of the loyal love of Yahweh.”
2 Timothy 2:14-15 LEB
“Remind people of these things, solemnly urging them before the Lord not to dispute about words. This is in no way beneficial and leads to the ruin of the hearers. Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, a worker having no need to be ashamed, guiding the word of truth along a straight path.”
